Anna Paquin was born in the city of Winnipeg, but was raised in Wellington. She began her acting career as Flora McGrath, her character in the romance film Piano. Flora is the child of a Scottish musician who was blind. The couple moved from Scotland to New Zealand during the middle of the 19th century in order to arrange a marriage. When she was a teenager, her family moved from Canada and eventually to United States. Paquin played the lead role in the film Fly Away Home in 1996 and also had a small part as Jane Eyre in the film when she was only a child. Paquin portrayed Frankie Addams as a child in the TV film adaptation Carson McCullers novel The Member of the Wedding. Paquin also had a role of the queen of Spain, in Steven Spielbergs 1997 movie Amistad. The role she played was for teenagers in Hurlyburly (1998), She's All That (2000), A Walk on the Moon (2000). She also played the role of a teen girl named Polexia Aphrodisa in Almost Famous (2000).
